The UK government has suspended the electronic visa system for Jordanian nationals, effective September 10, 2024. This decision comes amid concerns of misuse and immigration violations. The suspension means that Jordanians must moving forward apply for a visa before entering the UK.

Previously, beginning in February 2024, Jordanian nationals enjoyed visa-exempt status. Hence, this meant that they only needed an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to visit the UK. However, reports of “abuse and violations of the system” prompted the UK government to reconsider this arrangement in September.

The suspension affects Jordanian travelers significantly, as those visiting the UK must return to the traditional visa application process. More importantly, this change may cause inconvenience for those with existing travel plans.

Government Statements

In a memorandum, the British government elaborated on the reasons behind the new rule for Jordanian nationals visiting the UK.

“Following the lifting of the visa regime in February 2024, there has been a significant increase in Jordanian nationals who have traveled to the UK for purposes that are not permitted under the visit and Electronic Authorization (ETA) provisions, such as to live, work or claim asylum in the UK,” the statement read.

“The latest available published statistics demonstrate this trend with refusals of entry at the border rising from 10 in 2023 to 22 in the first quarter (January to March) of 2024 and 463 in the most recent quarter (April to June) of 2024.”

Meanwhile, the Jordanian foreign ministry confirmed the UK government’s decision. According to Sufyan al-Qudah, a spokesperson, the ministry had conducted multiple talks with the British authorities through its embassy in London. They discussed possible solutions in response to the reports of misuse and violation of immigration laws. However, Jordanian nationals’ continued wrong use of the ETA system led to the suspension.

How the suspension affects Jordanian travelers

Following the ETA suspension for Jordanian nationals, the following rules apply. Firstly, those with an ETA will be granted entry if they booked and paid for their trip before September 10. Additionally, they must arrive in the UK before 3:00 p.m. (local time) on October 8.

Should the Jordanian ETA holder travel to the UK after October 8, British authorities will cancel the ETA. In this case, they will need to apply for a visa instead.

If, on the other hand, Jordanian nationals are already in the UK, then they may remain in the UK. This holds true provided they abide by the rules on how the ETA may be used.

Economic and social implications

The suspension could have economic implications for both countries. Tourism between the UK and Jordan may decline, affecting local businesses and economies. Additionally, Jordanian citizens may face challenges in visiting family and friends in the UK.

While the change may cause temporary inconvenience, it opens the door to developing a more secure and effective visa system. Jordanians and UK travelers can look forward to future improvements that will enhance travel convenience and security for all.
